Dental advice for children :  Nursing bottle tooth decay

One of the most common forms of tooth decay during childhood is the baby bottle tooth decay and most often occurs in the upper front teeth.

WHAT CAUSES BOTTLE TOOTH DECAY

When the first teeth erupt their surface is not hardened enough and it is easier to get affected.

Infants are in high risk to suffer from tooth decay when sweetened liquids are given to them for long periods and especially before sleep.

Bacteria use the sugar as food, producing acids that affect the teeth that remain in acid environment for a long time.

When the baby is asleep, the saliva production is reduced increasing the danger of tooth decay.

PREVENTION

Give the bottle to the baby only during feeding

Don't fill it with sugar water or soft drinks

Don't use the bottle as a pacifier or at least fill it only with water.

Don't use the bottle for a long time

Don't leave the bottle to the child during sleep.

After each feeding wipe the baby's gums with a clean damp wash cloth. Brush the teeth after the first year.
